What’s the Difference Between a Boutique Portrait Studio and Shoot-and-Burn Photography?
When you start looking for a photographer, it is easy to assume you are comparing apples to apples. Same service, different prices. But there are actually two completely different business models out there, and knowing which one you are looking at before you book can save you a lot of time, money, and disappointment.
The Two Models
Shoot & burn Studio
This is exactly what it sounds like. A photographer shows up, shoots, hands over a digital download, and that is the end of it. You get a large gallery, sometimes hundreds of images, and then you are on your own. No pre-session consultation, no styling conversation, no direction during the shoot, no retouching, no in-person reveal. The images are delivered as-is. Most of them will live on your phone or a hard drive you will forget about.
Boutique Portrait Studio
A boutique portrait studio is a different thing entirely. I am not just there to click a shutter and hand you files. I am involved from the first conversation all the way through to what goes on your wall. What you walk away with is not a folder you have to sort through alone at midnight. It is something you are genuinely proud to display.
Photography by Desirée is a boutique studio. Here is what that actually looks like from the inside.
During Your Session:
After 30 years behind the camera, the technical side is automatic for me. That means my full attention goes where it actually belongs. On you. I keep things light and fun, and I mean that literally. My personal goal for every family session is for your husband or your son to walk away saying, “that was actually fun.” Not fine. Not tolerated. Easy and fun. The time will fly by.
I coach everyone through the whole session. I am watching your chin, your posture, your expression, the kids in the background, the moment just before someone laughs. I am directing and adjusting constantly. You will never stand there wondering what to do with your hands. I take care of all of it.
What comes out of that is a mix of polished portraits and real unguarded moments. Both matter and both are worth keeping.
After Your Session:
Most boutique clients tell me the reveal appointment is their favorite part, and I believe it. When you come back to the studio, the work is already done. I have narrowed down the best images, fully retouched my favorites, and built a slideshow so you see your photos the way they are meant to be seen. Not on a laptop at the kitchen table, scrolling through 300 files trying to figure out which one is least bad. You are sitting in a space designed for this, seeing your family the way I saw it.
Then we go through everything together. I can pull up a photo of your actual wall and design a custom collage to scale so you can see exactly what it will look like in your home before you commit to anything. No guessing, no hoping the size is right. When we have done it just right, we’ll know.
What You Take Home:
Every product is fully retouched and custom-made. Fine art prints, wall art on metal, canvas, and acrylic, heirloom albums, style books, digital files. Orders are ready in four to six weeks.
Here is something I feel strongly enough about that I built it into our most popular collection. Even our digital package includes a beautiful album. Not as an add-on. Just because I genuinely believe that much in having something you can hold. Research shows only about 2% of digital photos ever make it off a phone and onto a wall. I have seen it too many times. Clients come to me with hundreds of digital files from another photographer, sitting on a drive they have not opened in years. That is not what I want for you, and it is not what you showed up for.
What Shoot and Burn Actually Looks Like
A shoot-and-burn photographer shows up, shoots, and hands over a download. No styling conversation. No direction during the session. No retouching. No reveal. You get a big gallery and most of it will be… fine.
Just fine.
I have heard this story from clients more times than I can count. The session felt a little awkward. Nobody told them where to stand or what to do. And when the download arrived, the photos were okay, but not something anyone wanted to print. Not something that made them feel anything. So they put it off, and then they skipped photos for years.
Sure, there were a ton of photos. Too many in fact, it was overwhelming to look at them. Many things were left in your gallery that should have been deleted. No swaps happened. There are 8 photos that are very similar but something is off in each one, eyes closed, wrong expression… I go through those photos and make the 1 best image, if I have to swap faces I do that so you have the photo you actually want on your wall. I have the skill set to make all of that happen and you don’t even know about it. You didn’t have to ask, I just did it.
It is a waste of a moment that is not coming back. And the frustrating part is it did not have to go that way. And the thing is, it wasn’t just a moment. It could have been years that you decided the effort wasn’t worth it. And your family missed out on all those images over all those years. For mom’s, that could mean you are in very few photos over that time period, as the moms do the majority of the photo taking.
Why Boutique Costs More
Boutique photography costs more, it’s true. And when you are comparing numbers side by side, it can feel like you are paying a lot for photos when you could get more photos for less.
But that is not what you are actually paying for.
Thirty years of experience means I can read your family in the first five minutes and know exactly how to get the best from each person. The styling conversation means you show up prepared. The direction means the session is actually enjoyable. The retouching means every image is worth printing. The reveal means you see your photos the way they deserve to be seen. And the products mean something is actually on your wall a year from now, not sitting in a folder no one has opened.
Shoot and burn works fine for some people. But if you have ever walked away from a photo session with a download you never did anything with, or looked at your family photos and felt like something was missing, you were probably missing this.

The easiest first step is a free consultation. We will talk about what you are hoping to create, what a session here looks like start to finish, and whether it feels like the right fit. Fifteen minutes, no pitch.
